Exploring the Ancient Civilizations and Colonial Heritage of Mexico

In 1500 BCE, the Olmecs began a long history of settlement in what is today Mexico. They were followed by the Mayans, the Toltecs and the Aztecs. Each of these civilizations produced impressive cities with Teotihuacan (just outside of Mexico City) representing perhaps the zenith of this development with its massive pyramids. The Spaniards defeated Moctezuma and his island-capital Tenochtitlan in the early 16th century and paved the way for the colonization of Mexico.

Today Mexico is a fascinating destination, offering visitors a rich experience of breathtaking archaeological sites, charming colonial hill towns with lively squares, historic religious sites, local artisans, and savory Mexican cuisine. Mexico is blessed with many UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Program Highlights

Unearth Ancient Civilizations
Some of the largest and most advanced civilizations in the world were flourishing in Mexico centuries before the birth of Christ. Thanks to recent archaeological work, Mayan and Aztec cities are easily accessible both in central Mexico and the Yucatan. Discover ancient calendars, pyramids, temples, palaces and social institutions of these advanced peoples.

Discover Colonial Mexico
Some of the best examples of Spanish colonial architecture have been preserved in hilltowns around Mexico City. These charming cities include 16th and 17th century villas, convents, churches, colleges and town squares. Step into a simpler yet rich way of life - strolling past artisan studios, gracious cafe's, and serene fountains under the shade of historic trees and cascading flowers.

Explore the Spiritual Treasures of Mexico
Mexico has a proud religious heritage. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe is an important pilgrimage destination as are countless sites throughout colonial Mexico where local festivals preserve the memory of important saints. The Mexican people also preserve important aspects of indigenous spirituality that blends with the Catholicism they inherited from the Spaniards.
