The Heritage of Three Faiths in the Holy Land

An Illume Interfaith Journey

Human history is rich with tales of globe trekkers who have gained valuable insight about themselves and the world around them through the discovery and exploration of cultures outside their own. Today the world feels smaller, yet increasingly complex.

The Holy Land is revered by the three great religious traditions that trace their heritage to Abraham's faith in God. Judaism, Christianity and Islam share many common beliefs and perspectives but have suffered innumerable tensions and conflicts over the centuries. Illume coordinates interfaith events in the Holy Land, fostering opportunities for learning and dialogue in a land that is rich in history and includes sites where these diverse traditions intersect in ways conducive to common reflection, dialogue and mutual respect.

Program Objectives

Learn about each tradition's beliefs and practices

The Holy Land is one place where Judaism, Christianity and Islam are lived in a vibrant way - side-by-side. An interfaith experience in the Holy Land includes opportunities to experience the practices of each tradition, to learn about the historical roots of those practices, and gain an appreciation for the hope and vision of each tradition. Program includes visits to mosques, synagogues and churches where local believers live out their faith and preserve ancient customs.

Explore the heritage of one's own tradition

Each of these traditions traces its roots to the Holy Land. An interfaith experience is not only an opportunity for dialogue, it is a moment of profound discovery of the rich historical origins of one's own tradition. Walk in the footsteps of ancient Jewish prophets, priests, kings and believers. Trace the life and times of Jesus and his early disciples. Explore Muhammad's mystical flight to Jerusalem and Islam's reverence and connection to Jerusalem and other historical cities in the region.

Participate in interfaith activities and visit interfaith centers

Local Jews, Christians and Muslims have been forging new relationships of respect and understanding as a way to foster peace in the Holy Land. Indeed the word Jerusalem means "City of Peace." Illume will help you develop interfaith activities and identify local centers and organizations that will host your group for special events, seminars and activities.
