Intersection of Art, Religion & Politics in Rome
Rome is an incomparable place to study the relationship between religion, art and politics. Religion is both an expression of the underlying pattern of meaning in a culture and a way of sustaining and shaping that culture. This program includes a basic introduction to the life and institutions of ancient Rome, their influence on the emergence of a new cultural paradigm in early Christianity, and an in-depth experience of the art and architecture produced by classical, medieval and Renaissance Rome—all of which reflect underlying political and cultural values. The program includes visits to ancient Roman ruins, early Christian basilicas and house churches, beautiful medieval chapels and, of course, the magnificent art of the Renaissance—including St. Peter’s and the Vatican Museums.
