Early Christianity in Western Turkey and Greece
One of the most vibrant centers of early Christianity was in Asia
Minor in modern day western part of Turkey. New Testament
writings make reference to a number of cities and Christian communities
in this region—such as Ephesus, Colossae, Sardis, and Pergamon. Paul
journeyed through this land on all of his missionary journeys. Greece boasts important early Christian sites such as Corinth, Thessaloniki, and Philippi.
This region was a rich cosmopolitan area where Greek and Roman cities flourished as urban centers of trade, learning, and culture. Modern travelers have access to vast archeological parks that enable one to easily imagine the context of early Christian communities. These are great places to visualize the life of early Christians, to consider their message and witness in a pluralistic and affluent world, and to trace the ministry of great leaders such as Paul and John.
