In the Footsteps of Paul: Malta, Sicily and Rome

Paul, the great apostle of early Christianity, has become the focus of enormous attention in recent years as studies increasingly underscore his role in defining Christianity as we know it today. Tracing Paul’s ministry by visiting sites associated with his various journeys enables contemporary Christians to consider the context of the Gospel as it was preached in the 1st century. In many ways, Paul sought to bring the light of Christianity to a world very much like our own. These educational pilgrimages combine activities that invigorate faith, explore Christian history, and encourage a deeper commitment to and excitement about the Church. This program follows Paul’s final journey to Rome where he was martyred for his faith. It includes stops along his sea route in Malta, Sicily, and Naples—and then follows Paul’s overland journey into Rome. Illume invites you to explore the life and times of Paul! We provide innovative programming, unparalleled service, and professional friendly support for your group!

Program Objectives

Introduction to the history and culture of Malta, Sicily and Rome

Through visits to Malta, Sicily, Naples and Rome, visitors will be introduced to the culture of the Roman Empire at the time of Paul’s ministry. Scholars such as Dominic Crossan underscore that much of Paul's writing and ministry is best understood as offering a critique of high Roman civilization. Many believed that Roman was in the process of achieving one of the greatest civilizations ever. But Paul questions peace achieved through power (the Pax Romana) and offers an alternative approach: peace through justice. Thus, studying the beliefs, practices and institutions of this region of the Roman Empire helps visitors make sense of the Gospels and Epistles.

Exploration of Paul’s itinerary, ministry and martyrdom

By traveling to the actual sites Paul visited, participants gain a tangible sense of history. Biblical stories come to life and faith is invigorated. Visiting places where visionary men and women forged a new faith inspires participants to live their faith with renewed enthusiasm and hope in our own day and time.

Examination of the development of Christianity in Italy

This program envisions visits to sites associated with the earliest Christians in Italy. Some of the best archaeological sites for studying early Christian life exist in Italy. Visit early house churches, Christian burial sites with some of the earliest Christian art and symbols, and other sites that help us understand the social organization of the first generation of Christians.
