Exploring Franciscan Resources for Ministry: A Retreat in Assisi and Rome

Francis of Assisi initiated an important Church reform in the 13th century - a return to the richness and simplicity of the Gospel and a way of concretizing the life and ministry of Jesus in one's own life. The contemporary Church continues to need the revitalizing ministry of those who imitate Christ-like expressions of love, solidarity, compassion and hospitality.

The retreat’s primary setting is Assisi, Italy. This setting lends itself to exploring the resources of Franciscan spirituality for ministry. In this mystically rich town daily conferences will be given in evocative historical sites about topics relevant to the ministry of participant groups (be they groups of ordained ministers, religious orders of men and women, deacons, chaplains, campus ministry, parish staff, and religious educators). The conferences will help make practical applications between Franciscan gospel-based spirituality and the ministry and everyday lives of participants. The retreat concludes with a visit of Rome with focus on the experience of the earliest Christians. Experienced qualified retreat leaders will be engaged (or groups may supply their own retreat director). Retreat leaders will be selected and liturgy developed with respect to the particular denomination of the group.

Parish Leadership Retreat for Pastors, Lay Ministers & Parish Professionals What makes an excellent parish? What are the characteristics of a vibrant Christian community? Why does attendance and participation exceed expectations in some parishes? How doe some parishes develop the resources for excellent programming?

This retreat brings together people who are at the forefront of Catholic renewal to exchange ideas, create networks of support, and energize each other for ministry. The retreat is led by a pastor identified in Paul Wilkes’ book, Excellent Catholic Parishes with a retpuation as a leader in parish development and renewal.

The retreat begins in Assisi, an ideal place to take time out for reflection on the legacy of those who have envisioned ways to make the Gospel come alive in their own day and time – such as St. Francis. The retreat concludes in Rome giving participants an unparalleled opportunity to consider historical perspectives on different models of leadership throughout the history of Christianity – and savor the rich heritage of Christian art, architecture and liturgy .
