         Antiquarium & Parasol - Sevilla

Seville has opened a new urban site at the Plaza de la Encarnacion - the Metropol Parasol.  It is a iconic wooden arbor created by German architect Jurgen Mayer H.  The site includes a market, restaurants, shops and place for concerts and other events.  Most importantly, it showcases the newly opened Antiquarium Seville, an archaeological museum that includes artifacts as well as excavated ruins of Roman houses (from the time of Emperor Tiberius), mosaics and a Muslim house from the 12th century.  The Antiquarium includes interactive exhibits that chronicle life in Andalusia over the millenia. Sevile is an ideal destination for educational and religious groups.  It includes a rich multi-religious heritage with Jewish, Muslim and Catholic monuments - including the huge Gothic cathedral, the Giralda (the bell tower built out of the former minaret), the Barrio Santa Cruz, and the Alcazar - a fortress built by Mudejar craftsmen from Granada.  It was from here that explorers and colonists were sent to the Americas.  The Archivo de las Indias includes exhibits of documents relating to the conquest of the Americas.

Visit Seville during Semana Santa - where processions wind through narrow streets during Holy Week culminating with the Feria de Seville after Easter.  Combine Seville with a visit to Cordoba, Granada and Toledo, exploring the heritage of three faiths in southern Spain.  Learn more.
