Scavi Under San Lorenzo - Perugia
An extensive new archaeological site has been opened up under the Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Perugia, Italy. The excavations include remains of Etruscan civilization from the 6th century BCE through the medieval period. The encompass not only Etruscan ruins but ancient Roman, early Christian and medieval remains. The itinerary runs approximately 1 km in length and is 15 meters below the surface of the current Cathedral floor. Access is through the Diocesan Museum and requires a reservation and group guided visit due to the complexity of the site.
Perugia lies in a rich part of central Italy where the heritage of medieval Christianity is accessible in Assisi (home of St. Francis and St. Clare), Gubbio, Cortona, Arezzo and Perugia. It is possible to base out of Assisi or Perugia and do day excursions to these various hill towns, exploring the rich religious, artistic and cultural heritage of Umbria and Tuscany.
